  • This position reports to the Urgent Care Site Chief and Medical Director (currently Dr. Charles Wong) and the Department Head(s) for Rural Medicine (currently Dr. Ron Spice).
    • The role works in close conjunction with the Urgent Care Executive team, comprised of the aforementioned, the Department Head(s) for Family Medicine (currently Dr. Mike Spady), and the other four Urgent Care Site Medical Directors.
  • Provide medical leadership and direction for site services relating to Urgent Care in collaboration with the Airdrie Urgent Care Operations team members
    • Support a healthy dyad relationship with the Airdrie Urgent Care manager
    • Support the goals and objectives of the Department of Rural Medicine and Alberta Health Services.
    • Collaborate with the local PCN (Highland PCN) regarding service delivery
    • Lead recruitment of physicians to the Urgent Care Service within the guidelines of the Department of Rural Medicine and AHS Medical Affairs
    • Ensure adequate physician coverage of the Airdrie Urgent Care Centre during all hours of operation
      • Prepare for and manage unexpected medical staffing shortages
      • Respond to fluctuating patient care volumes and needs
    • Be a liaison between the Urgent Care physicians and AHS
    • Monitor and direct medical staff compliance with the AHS Conflict of Interest Bylaw and Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules in collaboration with the Department of Rural Medicine
    • Collaborate with medical staff to develop and lead initiatives that promote quality patient care and support continuous quality improvement
    • Promote the ongoing continuing medical education (CME) of the medical staff
    • Investigate and respond to patient and staff concerns related to care provided by medical staff in a timely manner

  • In collaboration with the Urgent Care Executive team (which includes the Medical Director and other site leads), define the optimal skill set for physicians working in Urgent Care along with required professional development and minimum required monthly shifts (or hours) to obtain and maintain such skills
  • Assist with development and implementation of practice protocols to be implemented at Airdrie Urgent Care as well as collaborating with other Site Chiefs with their local initiatives
  • Completion of periodic performance review of urgent care physicians as required by Medical Staff Bylaws
  • Be an active contributing member of the Urgent Care Executive team, including attending periodic meetings
  • The time requirement is a 0.2 FTE

- Experienced physician with urgent care or emergency department experience

- Licensure and good standing through the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

- Additional training or designation in emergency medicine (CCFP-EM or FRCPC) is considered an asset

- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to effectively develop and lead teams

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

- Proven organizational skills

- Ability to identify and balance priorities and interests of the public, Alberta Health Services and physicians

- Academic appointment through the University of Calgary is considered an asset

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Must read, write and speak English.
