Alberta Health Services and the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine are inviting applications for an Adult Psychiatrist to join the Adult Gender Clinic based primarily out of the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC). This clinic is part of a broader Calgary Zone Gender Services initiative which continues to evolve and expand in order to best meet the health care needs of the trans and gender-diverse community. Opportunities for both full-time or part-time involvement exist.
The FMC Adult Gender Clinic serves adults and youth (16 years of age and older) who are questioning their gender identity or wanting to medically transition. The clinic is available to more than 1.5 million people in Calgary and surrounding areas and has currently seen over 300 patients with a large referral base. The clinic aims to provide:
- comprehensive assessment regarding gender identity
- treatment of co-occurring mental health concerns (e.g. mood and anxiety related to gender)
- education and support regarding social transition (e.g. family, work, legal document changes)
- referrals to access hormones and/or surgery required for transition
The clinic works collaboratively with therapists, community psychologists, social workers, speech language pathologists, and a multidiscinplinary physician team (family medicine, endocrinology, gynecology, plastic surgery, ENT, and urology) in order to provide competent and complete transition-related care.
The clinic practices are in keeping with the WPATH Standards of Care 7 (SOC), as well as current Canadian guidelines; the successful candidate shall be familiar and competent with these SOC, as well as open and willing to keep pace alongside the progressive changes expected in newer SOC.
The successful candidate will take part in teaching undergraduate medical students and/or resident physicians, and is encouraged to apply for an academic appointment with the Univeristy of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine.
The successful candidate will also have an opertunity for leadership in shaping the landscape for trans-affirming care in Calgary.
