The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine, Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone invites applications for the position of Anesthesiologist as a Clinical Lecturer at the South Health Campus in Calgary. All permanent staff members are hired in the department at the level of Clinical Lecturer, unless the candidate holds a higher academic rank at another Canadian University. Support is available for those seeking academic promotion.

We are looking for a 1.0 FTE staff anesthesiologist. The starting date for the position is April 01, 2020.

You would be expected to be involved in all clinical areas of the section, including:

1. Clinical anesthesia care in the operating rooms, pre-operative assessment clinic(s), acute pain consultation service, non-OR anesthesia services (e.g. endoscopy, diagnostic imaging, woman’s health outpatient clinics), and obstetrical anesthesia.

2. Take an active role in the education and instruction of medical students, anesthesia residents, off service residents, respiratory therapy students, hospital respiratory therapists, paramedic students, orientees, and other allied health members in both the operating room and other anesthesia service areas.

3. Participate in Section and zone-wide educational activities (in both presentation and audience roles).

4. Participate in simulation and team-training exercises.

5. Participate in Section and zone-wide administration and committee work at the discretion of the Section Chief and Zone Clinical Department Head.

6. As a citywide department, there is also an expectation of work at non-hospital surgical facilities, as well as other acute care sites, as required by the section or zone department.

7. Members are required to use the anesthesia electronic record.

8. Members are required to adhere to Section holiday and time off scheduling practices.

9. Your call commitment will be consistent with that of other members of your section.

10. All Applicants will familiarize themselves with the AHS Medical Staff Bylaws.

SHC Highlights:

South Health Campus is a tertiary care center affiliated with the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine and is one section within the citywide Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine. We provide anesthesia for a range of surgical specialties, including orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, plastics, as well as gynecology/obstetrics. As Calgary’s newest and smallest anesthesia section, we are keen to continue building a cohesive academic department.

Calgary Highlights:

Calgary is approximately 80km east of the Canadian Rockies and is located in the transition zone between the Rocky Mountain Foothills and the Canadian prairies. It is the largest city in Alberta, with a metropolitan population of 1,239,220 people (Statistics Canada, 2016). The city is large in physical area, consisting of an inner city surrounded by suburban communities of various densities.

Calgary’s climate is greatly influenced by the city’s elevation and proximity to the Rocky Mountains. Calgary’s winters are broken up by warm, dry Chinook winds that routinely blow into the city from over the mountains during the winter months.

Calgary has a vibrant theatre, art, food, sports and music community. It was designated as one of the cultural capitals of Canada in 2012. The city features an eclectic mix of restaurants and bars, cultural venues, public squares and shopping.

The successful Candidate will have their FRCPC in Anesthesia; demonstrate an ability to work effectively with a multi-disciplinary team; superior interpersonal communication skills; and a strong commitment to delivering innovative anesthetic care. The Pillars of South Health Campus include collaboration, patient and family-centered care, wellness, and innovation.

Applicants must be a qualified MD or equivalent, with specialist certification in anesthesia, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta for independent anesthesia care.

Preferences will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following:

- Fellowship training and/or evidence of advanced skills/expertise in Regional Anesthesia

- Acute pain management leadership and program development

- Fellowship training in Chronic Pain Management, with motivation to participate in the SHC Transitional Pain Services

- Fellowship training and/or evidence of advanced skills in Perioperative Ultrasound

- Advanced degrees in Medical Education/Simulation

- Evidence of advanced leadership experience and skills (e.g. previous advanced administrative roles)

- Research

- Patient Safety/QA

Required competencies include Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (required for non-hospital surgical facility work).

Candidates must possess membership with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (with current maintenance of certification), and must demonstrate a strong interest in teaching. Priority will be given to candidates with 5 years or more of clinical experience.

The annual allotment of $2656 carries forward for three years but expires on March 31 of the fourth year if not used.
