Program Description: Community and Addiction Mental Health Clinic at Northeast Campus, Calgary
Psychiatrists at the North East Mental Health Clinic provide psychiatric assessment, consultation and follow-up to the broad range of moderately to severely mentally ill patients from community referrals, predominantly from North East Calgary as well as serving the Peter Lougheed Hospital where we often follow patients discharged from the inpatient units and day program there. Most patients are voluntary although we also have a significant number of patients on CTO's, and liaise with programs such as CET, PACT and ACT.
We have recently merged with a clinic serving primarily mood and anxiety disorders as well as ADHD and we have recently developed DBT and ADHD groups in addition to our other individual and group therapies. We have therapists trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy working with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There is also a Perinatal Clinic Connected with our program. Most areas of interest are available to be accommodated although there is an expectation to be open to all general adult referrals.
Psychiatrists work in a team environment where most patients are co-managed with therapist/case managers who will see patients regularly between psychiatrist appointments. Psychiatrists may also manage some patients via the Physician Only Stream when indicated.
The North East Mental Health Clinic has adopted the Recovery Model, which emphasizes active movement towards recovery-based goals and facilitating effective transfers to community partners (e.g. GP follow-up and other services) when clients have stabilized or ceased to engage actively/effectively in services. We are working with our community partners to enhance this process. This includes recently developing a peer support program to help transition clients to the community.
Our multidisciplinary team includes mental health clinicians (SW, Nursing, Psychology), Occupational Therapy, Outreach Workers, and Independent Living Skills therapists. We also have access to psychology assessments and psychosocial rehabilitation for our clients.
Our strongest need at this point is for psychiatrists interested in providing individual assessments and follow-up, primarily for cases co-managed with our therapist/case manager team. Psychiatrist participation in co-leading therapy groups (DBT, CBT, CBSST, Skills) has been welcomed in the past, and remains an option for a portion of the psychiatrist's involvement at our clinic. This position is ideal for a psychiatrist with a broad range of clinical interests and who appreciates working with a team of skilled mental health professionals.
