The Section of Hospital Pediatrics provides comprehensive, tertiary inpatient acute and complex care care to children in Southern Alberta, SE British Columbia and SW Saskatchewan; a catchment area of approximately 2.5 million people. We provide 24/7 inpatient coverage for approximately 80% of hospitalized medical patients, excluding the PICU, NICU, Psychiatry and Oncology units. Responsibilities consist of attending physician coverage for inpatients on one of 5 general pediatric teams including: clinical teaching teams (generally acute care), non-teaching acute care teams, and non-teaching complex care teams. It also includes overnight, in-house shifts. Hospital Pediatricians at Alberta Children’s Hospital are responsible to be first responders to any emergency resuscitation codes outside of the ER and ICU-units.
The 127 bed Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) opened in 2006 followed by the adjacent Child Development Centre, Rotary Flames House Hospice, and a Ronald McDonald House. The Department of Pediatrics has over 300 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the rapidly growing Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Refer to the Department of Pediatrics website at www.ucalgary.ca/paed for more information about the Department, its faculty, services and accomplishments.
