The Section of Hospital Pediatrics provides comprehensive, tertiary inpatient acute and complex care care to children in Southern Alberta, SE British Columbia and SW Saskatchewan; a catchment area of approximately 2.5 million people. We provide 24/7 inpatient coverage for approximately 80% of hospitalized medical patients, excluding the PICU, NICU, Psychiatry and Oncology units. Responsibilities consist of attending physician coverage for inpatients on one of 5 general pediatric teams including: clinical teaching teams (generally acute care), non-teaching acute care teams, and non-teaching complex care teams. It also includes overnight, in-house shifts. Hospital Pediatricians at Alberta Children’s Hospital are responsible to be first responders to any emergency resuscitation codes outside of the ER and ICU-units.

The 127 bed Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) opened in 2006 followed by the adjacent Child Development Centre, Rotary Flames House Hospice, and a Ronald McDonald House. The Department of Pediatrics has over 300 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the rapidly growing Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Calgary is a modern and rapidly growing cosmopolitan municipality with a population of over 1.2 million people, and boasts an excellent school system (both public and private), a vibrant international cultural scene, with proximity (<1 hour) to the Canadian Rocky Mountains (Banff and Jasper National Parks, Lake Louise, etc.). The city is beautifully laid out with rivers, parks and other recreational areas. There are plentiful opportunities for delving into the arts, music and sports. Many attributes contribute to an overall outstanding quality of life.

Qualifications include an MD and certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Pediatrics, or equivalent.

The successful applicant will hold a locum appointment in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Calgary. The compensation is competitive and based on a sessional funding model.
