The Medical Director, Urgent Care and Section Chief, Urgent Care are two interdependent roles with accountabilities to the Community, Rural and Continuing Care portfolio through the Departments of Family Medicine and Rural Medicine via the Zone Clinical Department Heads. This position works within a dyad model with the Director for Primary Care, Chronic Disease Management and Urban Urgent Care, and the Executive Director for Rural Health.

Primary responsibilities include:

Medical Director, Urgent Care Program:

  • To provide medical leadership to the Urgent Care Program;
  • Collaboration with Urgent Care Management to lead and support ongoing quality improvement activities,
  • To develop and foster linkages among AHS zone portfolios, clinical departments, and services as well as external community organizations including Primary Care Networks.
  • To collaborate with all Urgent Care programs in the province to plan services, establish standardized policies and protocols and co-chair of the Provincial Urgent Care Leadership Committee.

Department of Family Medicine and Department of Rural Medicine:

  • Oversee recruitment and retention of physicians for high quality, safe and sustainable delivery of care in Urgent Care Centres as delegated to the site chiefs;

  • Recruitment and supervision of Site Chiefs for Urgent Care Centres;

  • Supervision and support to Site Chiefs to ensure appropriate and timely investigation and resolution of Patient Concerns and complaints regarding physician performance in Urgent Care Centres; and

  • Supervision and support to Site Chiefs for completion of Periodic Reviews and other medical staff matters as required by the Medical Staff Bylaws.

  1. Emergency Departments and EMS;

  2. Community and other AHS services and programs, as appropriate,

  3. Primary Care Networks.

  4. Managers of Rural and Urban facilities (including Rural Section Chiefs and Site Management)

  5. Urgent Care operational managers

Core Committee Membership

  1. Department of Family Medicine Executive Committee

  2. Provincial Urgent Care Leadership Committee (co-chair)

  3. Department of Rural Medicine Executive Committee

Time Commitment

0.3 FTE


Accountable to the Clinical Department Head, Department of Family Medicine, Calgary Zone, and Department Head Rural Medicine, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services.


· Physician with experience in Urgent Care or Emergency Medicine with an interest in Urgent Care services. Current or recent work in an urgent care setting is considered an asset

· Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to effectively develop and lead teams.

· Demonstrated successful interpersonal and communication skills.

· Proven organizational skills.

· Knowledge of Calgary Zone–AHS structure, governance, clinical and operational departments.

· Ability to identify and balance priorities and interests of the public, Alberta Health Services and physicians.

· Clinical appointment with AHS, Calgary Zone

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Must read, write and speak English.

Remuneration as per AHS Physician contract schedule.
