As part of the provincial strategy for the management of obesity from childhood through to adults, there are three tertiary care pediatric weight management clinics (two in Edmonton and one in Calgary). The Calgary Pediatric Centre for Weight and Health is located at the Alberta Children’s Hospital and also runs clinics at the South Health Campus. This is a multi-disciplinary clinic that includes a nurse, dietician, exercise specialist, psychologist and social worker. The target population of this clinic is children with overweight and obesity with or without associated co-morbidities (for example: mental health, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver, dyslipidemia, polycystic ovarian syndrome, etc.).

The primary goal of this clinic is to provide intense healthy lifestyle interventions and medical management for children who are overweight or obese. A secondary goal of this clinic will be to work collaboratively with the other provincial pediatric weight management programs in order to assess the effectiveness of therapy being offered with the ultimate aim of optimizing health in children who are overweight or obese.

The role of this pediatrician will include: triaging referrals to this clinic, medical assessment and management of patients, working collaboratively with the team of health care professionals in the planning of therapy, consultations with appropriate subspecialty pediatrics as needed (for example: mental health, endocrinology, pulmonary, cardiology, etc.), and participating in meetings regarding the clinic function. The clinic is always evolving to meet best practices and deliver quality care. Opportunities will be available for introducing any new innovations or ideas for the clinic, helping to design group programming for the clinic, providing educational sessions on childhood obesity for the public or other health care professional, teaching of medical students and residents, and assisting with data collection and research studies if there is an interest.

This 0.1 FTE position is 100% clinical. This physician will be linked with the Section of Pediatric Endocrinology at Alberta Children’s Hospital and will report directly to the Section Chief for Pediatric Endocrinology. Administration and management of the Pediatric Centre for Weight and Health clinic will be through the Section of Pediatric Endocrinology endocrinology. Specialist on-call coverage for the Pediatric Centre for Weight and Health is covered through the Pediatric Endocrinology on-call service.

Qualifications include certification in Pediatrics by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent and candidates must be eligible for an independent practice permit from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Must read, write and speak English.
