Duties will include providing clinical care on the inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases services at the adult acute health care centres in Calgary as well being the Director of the Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Clinic in Calgary. This position will work in collaboration with the Director and Medical Director: STI Portfolio and Communicable Disease Control Executive. As a member of the Infectious Diseases Section in the Department of Medicine, the successful applicant will also be involved in research activities and would participate in teaching at the University of Calgary in undergraduate/postgraduate clinical and academic programs especially in the area of STIs.

The STI program includes treatment, prevention and research activities related to all STIs in the Calgary Zone. The clinic provides care for over 23,000 patients per year. As Director of the STI Program, the successful applicant will provide leadership to the Clinic as well as providing active patient care for STI patients. A small number of HIV positive patients are cared for at the STI Clinic. The Medical Director is responsible for the staging all syphilis cases. The Medical Director works with the Partner Notification Nurse Teams in Calgary and in the surrounding area to ensure expeditious testing and treatment of partners. The Medical Director acts as the media spokesperson for all STI related inquiries except those related to HIV.

The Medical Director works with the Nursing Manager of the STI Clinic to ensure that the STI nurses provide excellent care for the Clinic patients. The Medical Director also functions as the Medical Officer of Health to authorize the writing of treatment prescriptions to be delegated to the clinic nurses in accordance with the Alberta Public Health Act and CARNA rules.

The successful applicant will work in collaboration with a wide variety of partners at a local, provincial and national level in the planning, execution, evaluation and maintenance of the STI program. The STI program has strong links to the Public Health Department, the Provincial STI program and the Calgary Zone HIV clinic. Collaboration with other Alberta Health Services partners within the Calgary Zone such as the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Section of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, the Provincial Laboratory of Public Health, Calgary Laboratory Services and the Calgary Sexual Assault Response Team is essential. The Calgary STI clinic also serves as a resource for primary care physicians in Banff and Canmore

The Medical Director must maintain excellent working relationships with a variety of community agencies who care for individuals who are at high risk of acquiring STIs. These agencies include but are not limited to the Calgary Refugee Clinic, the Calgary Sexual Health Clinic, the Alex Community Centre and Exit Street Outreach.

Qualifications required include a Medical Degree, certification in Internal Medicine with eligibility for regular or special licensure in the Province of Alberta, sub-specialty certification in Infectious Diseases (by November 2017) and an expressed interest in Sexually Transmitted Infections. The candidate is expected to adhere to the Alberta Health Services Bylaws and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Code of Conduct.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

This position will be remunerated through participation in the Alternate Funding Plan. This Plan provides a comprehensive and nationally competitive compensation package. Under this plan a day = 10 hours of work and a 1.0 FTE is 230 days or 460 half days.

The Practitioner is responsible for purchasing health and insurance benefits.

Continuing Medical Education reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible Practitioner receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for three years.
