Bariatric Surgeon Posting

The Clinical Department of Surgery, Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone and the Division of General Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta are accepting applications for an Academic General Surgeon with advanced training in MIS/Bariatric Surgery.

The General Surgery program presently consists of 53 General Surgeons and provides service to the City of Edmonton and surrounding communities. We provide specialized care in all aspects of General Surgery including hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation, general surgical oncology, head and neck surgery, endocrine surgery, trauma, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery, breast surgery, and minimally invasive surgery.

The Division of General Surgery has one of Canada’s largest General Surgery training programs and is recruiting a surgeon to start July 1, 2018. The successful applicant will be based primarily out of the Royal Alexandra Hospital and will have a job description which includes a commitment to clinical care delivery, education and research. Remuneration will be on a fee-for-services basis through billings submitted by the physician to Alberta Health.

The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of over 40 staff, which includes 4 surgeons, plus nutritionists, psychologists, bariatric nursing and administrative support. The bariatric program is provincially funded (as part of Alberta's Weight Wise program) and the clinic manages over a 1,000 patients a year. This leads to over 300 primary and revisional bariatric procedures performed per annum. In addition to the primary bariatric clinic staffed by allied health professionals, clinical associates and internists, there is also (and unique in North America) a bariatric revision surgery clinic dedicated to addressing the problems of weight recidivism, previously failed bariatric surgery and medical tourism. This entire infrastructure is part of the wider provincial obesity strategy with dedicated satellite and outreach clinics geared up to manage the burgeoning provincial obesity problem.

In addition to bariatric surgery the successful candidate would join the group of 10 general surgeons working out of the Royal Alexandra Hospital who cover a broad spectrum of general surgery including advance minimal invasive surgery, trauma, surgical oncology, colorectal surgery and general surgery on-call. The Royal Alexandra Hospital is one of Edmonton’s largest and longest serving hospitals, offering general and specialized medical and surgical health services, and featuring one of Canada's busiest emergency departments. Located in the heart of Edmonton's city centre, the Royal Alexandra Hospital serves a diverse community stretching from downtown Edmonton to western and northern Canada. The hospital operates 749 beds, cares for almost half a million patients annually, and employs over 4,800 full-and part-time staff. As one of Alberta's largest surgical facilities, the hospital plays a lead role in the expansion and development of minimally invasive surgery, a rapidly evolving technique that helps patients heal and return to productive lives faster.

The successful candidate will care for surgical inpatients and outpatients, and participate in the on-call rotation supporting the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Edmonton Zone through a regional referral program covering Northern Alberta.

Applicants must hold an MD from an accredited medical school with completed training in General Surgery, fellowship training in advanced MIS/Bariatric Surgery, a Master’s of Public Health or PhD equivalent and must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. This individual must hold a current board certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in General Surgery, and have experience in both primary and revisional Bariatric Surgery. They must be eligible for licensure in Alberta.

Remuneration will be on a fee-for-services basis through billings submitted by the physician to Alberta Health.

Details about the University of Alberta, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the Department of Surgery can be found at Information about Alberta Health Services and the City of Edmonton can be found at and respectively.
