The Division of General Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, and the Clinical Department of Surgery, Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone is accepting applications for a Locum General Surgeon with training in Trauma Surgery and/or Acute Care Surgery.
The locum dates will be January 1, 2020 – June 30, 2020. The candidate will be expected to exhibit an interest in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. The primary practice site for this position has been identified as the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The Royal Alexandra Hospital is one of Edmonton’s largest and longest serving hospitals, offering general and specialized medical and surgical health services, and features one of Canada's busiest emergency departments. Located in the heart of the City of Edmonton, the Royal Alexandra Hospital provides a wide variety of health services to the City of Edmonton and surrounding area. The hospital operates 749 beds and cares for almost half a million patients annually, and employs over 4,800 full-and part-time staff.
The Division of General Surgery presently consists of 53 General Surgeons and provides service to the City of Edmonton and surrounding communities. The Division provides specialized care in all aspects of General Surgery including hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation, general surgical oncology, head and neck surgery, endocrine surgery, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery, breast surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. The Division of General Surgery has one of the largest training programs in General Surgery in Canada.
The successful candidate will care for surgical inpatients and outpatients, and participate in the on-call rotation supporting the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Edmonton Zone, as well as referrals through a regional referral program covering Northern Alberta. Remuneration is based on a fee-for service model with billing directly to Alberta Health. This individual will also take part in the undergraduate and post-graduate surgery curricula at the University of Alberta. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic Colleague appointment in the Department of Surgery, University of Alberta. This will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.
