Welcome to Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

We are located in northeast Alberta, nestled in the boreal forest at the confluence of four rivers. Fort McMurray, the largest city in the Municipality, is considered an urban service area.

Fort McMurray is a place immersed in natural beauty where land, sky and water meet. Canoe the historic travel and trade routes followed by early trappers and explores, explore the sand dunes, hike the trails, fish the pristine clear waters of Northern Alberta and gaze in awe at the Aurora Borealis. We are a nature lover’s paradise with the urban city feel.

In addition to Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo consists of ten smaller communities: Anzac, Conklin, Draper, Fort Chipewyan, Fort Fitzgerald, Fort MacKay, Gregoire Lake Estates, Janvier/Chard, Mariana Lakes and Saprae Creek Estates. Each of these communities has its own unique charms and attractions.

Fort Chipewyan is Alberta’s oldest settled community. 200 years of rich history has created a destination that has enticed explorers, fur traders, and adventure enthusiasts since the 18th century. Fort Chipewyan is the launch point for your adventure into Wood Buffalo National Park or an ideal “leave your worries behind” retreat.

Fort McMurray is a diverse multicultural community. There are many festivals and events offered all year round to celebrate the local diversity in the areas of heritage, public and culture. To name a few: Malanka “Ukrainian New Year’s Celebration”, Chinese New Year, Winter Play, Culture Days, Canada Day, Urban Market, Celtic Day, Relay for Life

In addition to the Fort McMurray public school district, Catholic school district and the Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord school, Fort McMurray has Keyano College. Keyano College is a modern college with three campuses and four learning centers.

It is a community that has strong family values and has opportunities in any sporting event for youths to adults. Options for children in theatre, sports, dance and recreation are endless.

Fort McMurray also has an international Airport. Many local and national flights are available. For those who wish to drive the new double lane highway, Edmonton is 435 km south on Highway 63.
