The Mennonites decided to settle midway between Caracajou and the Hudson’s Bay trading post; two already established settlements – namely, La Crete. Today the population of the Hamlet & surrounding area is close to 9,000. Despite constant growth, La Crete still holds onto a strong culture and religion. Many residents use a German dialect called “Plautdietsch” or “Low German”. “High German”, which is still spoken in Germany today, is reserved mainly for church services. Most of the community speaks English and conducts business in both languages.

Although the hamlet of La Crete is relatively remote, you will find a good variety in local shopping and family entertainment. You will also enjoy a variety of dining options from traditional Mennonite foods to Western Cuisine in visiting the local restaurants. La Crete has exceptionally large grocery, hardware and drug stores - something that amazes most tourists when they first visit the community.

La Crete has grown to where it is today by the hard work of its people. Originally La Crete was settled as a farming community. During the winter months, people began logging and these two industries have been the sustenance over the past decades.

The community offers many points of interest especially enjoyed in our peaceful vast outdoors. You will enjoy activities such as snowmobiling, sledding, cross country skiing, bowling, curling, senior recreational men's and women's hockey and a fitness centre during the winter months. This is also an opportune time to witness spectacular northern lights which often appear night after night. The summer offers quading, camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing and other water sports, nature walking trails, golf, baseball, pro rodeo as well as fun rodeo, stock car racing, annual antique car parade, annual Canada day parade and activities, annual pioneer days, antique tractor parade, annual mud derby and much more all of which can be enjoyed late in the day due to late sunsets.

La Crete has excellent schools with a high academic success rate as well as competitive and successful sports teams. All of the high school sports teams have been in the top 3 in the zone for the past 3 years. Activities such as minor hockey, skate Canada figure skating club, dance lessons, gymnastics, drama, piano and other music lessons, 4-H Clubs and many playgrounds are available for children and youth. A local FCSS office that provides excellent preschool programs such as Moms & Tots, Read to Me, Primary Pathways to name a few. Bright Futures Society also has an excellent preschool program.

The nearest commercial airport is 11/2 hours away but La Crete does have an air strip for small locally owned planed; and private air charter is available on demand

Fun Facts

The Crest: “LaCrete” which translates as “The Crest”, can refer to a “Rooster’s comb” and was used to describe the ridge of land where they came ashore about nine kilometers southwest of where the hamlet is today.
