Are you a physician who is passionate about the health and wellbeing of the public? If so, Alberta Health Services’s opportunity for a Medical Officer of Health (MOH) in its South Zone is for you!

Joining a cohesive, integrated and well-coordinated team, you will have the opportunity to strategize, deliver, and advocate for public and population health in the South Zone. In this 0.5 FTE position, you will practice within a broad public health portfolio while leveraging already established relationships with the community and physicians.

Reporting to the Lead Medical Officer of Health in the South Zone, the MOH will have a leadership position within Alberta Health Services. Under the Public Health Act, the MOH has statutory responsibilities related to investigation and control of communicable diseases, infection prevention and control and environmental threats to the health of the population. In addition to these program-specific responsibilities, the MOH has responsibility for bringing a public health / population health perspective to strategic and operational planning in the health system.

  • Providing public health leadership and expertise as a Public Health Consultant on matters of health protection and promotion, and injury and disease prevention.

  • Developing and leading strategic initiatives applicable to population and public health matters.

  • Working as the physician partner of the Public Health Director in public health matters.

  • Contributing to the areas of communicable disease control and immunization programming.

  • Participating in public health research and training of public health professionals.

  • Implementing and influencing established processes to take into account population health approaches.

  • MD eligible for licensure in Alberta.

  • FRCPC with speciality in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (or equivalent); CCFP with additional training in public health (MPH) will be considered.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in public health / community medicine, in the Canadian context.

  • Leadership experience including financial management, planning and program development.

Additional Required Qualifications:

  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience communicating with the general public, media, and government officials.
  • Experience in clinical medicine and strong clinical decision making skills.
  • Emergency management experience.

Alberta Medical Association (AMA) Incentives

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,063 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
