This position is open to qualified AHS employees only

This role is a significant position within AHS. The FMD is the face of the medical staff at the facility. As well as leading their physician colleagues, they are often the first point of contact for local issues relating to physicians for operational leaders, and so the ability to build positive, effective relationships with all staff at the facility is crucial.

Although the FMD has a number of formal responsibilities, perhaps the most important part of their work is to help create a culture of collaboration to ensure high quality and safe patient care, built on the bedrock of a trusting, multidisciplinary team environment. The FMD can help set the tone for the facility and in doing so, significantly contribute to its future success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Convene local site Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) meetings

  • Meet with your operational partner (site manager) and AZMD regularly

  • Review applications for privileges in your facility

  • Performance assessments for medical staff moving from probationary to active status

  • Periodic reviews for all active medical staff (every 3 years, or annual for staff > 65 years old)

  • Ensuring on call coverage and managing issues that arise

  • Identify need for and manage recruitment together with Medical Affairs

  • Workforce service planning

  • Together with operations, manage local issues related to physicians, including concerns and complaints

  • Identify organizational risks (patient safety, political, media) and escalate to medical and operational leadership

Represent the facility positively to external stakeholders

Must hold a valid and relevant license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Currently practicing in Central Zone.

This Medical Leadership position estimated time commitment is 1.9 hours/week. Compensation to be mutually agreed upon.
