Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Surgery, Division of General Surgery, invites applications for a General Surgeon. The successful applicant will be based primarily at the Sturgeon Community Hospital.

The University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. Alberta Health Services is Canada’s largest and only provincial health region providing services for a population of over 4.2 million people.

The General Surgery program presently consists of 54 General Surgeons and provides service to the City of Edmonton and surrounding communities. We provide specialized care in all aspects of General Surgery including hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation, general surgical oncology, head and neck surgery, endocrine surgery, trauma, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery, breast surgery, and minimally invasive surgery.

The Sturgeon Community Hospital is located in St Albert and operates within the Edmonton Zone. We are a group of five general surgeons who work in a community care hospital. We are recruiting a general surgeon with acute care experience. We are currently able to offer OR days on Fridays. Endoscopy time will be available in the Edmonton zone.

The successful applicant will have a job description which includes a commitment to clinical care delivery, education and research. Remuneration will be on a fee-for-services basis through billings submitted by the physician to Alberta Health & Wellness. The successful candidate will care for surgical inpatients and outpatients, and participate in an on-call rotation supporting the Sturgeon Community Hospital and the entire Edmonton Zone.

Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent with completed training in General Surgery and must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. This individual must have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in General Surgery or equivalent.


Temporary office space will be offered by one of the surgeon’s offices in St Albert while the successful candidate establishes his/her own office space.

This individual will take part in the undergraduate and post-graduate surgery curricula at the University of Alberta. Therefore, the successful candidate will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic appointment in the Department of Surgery, University of Alberta. This will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

The proposed start date will be March 1, 2019 however, the competition will remain open until the position is filled.
