Together with the SPO, the Senior Medical Director of IPC is accountable for delivering IPC quality and safety initiatives across the continuum of care and throughout Alberta. Working closely with physician and operational leadership, this role will require objective setting, implementation, and evaluation of IPC policies, procedures, best practices and surveillance strategies. The SMD will assist the SPO, IPC in setting and managing the overall operating and capital budgets for the portfolio — including resources related to physician practice and activities.

The successful candidate will build and maintain excellent working relationships with various internal and external stakeholders, including public health (and Medical Officers of Health), laboratories, public agencies, government, and Covenant Health, Canada’s largest Catholic provider of health services. Fostering relationships within Alberta's medical and health science post-secondary institutions and health regulatory colleges is important in engaging current and future healthcare workers in the mission of IPC. The Senior Medical Director of IPC will also be asked to participate and represent the physician voice in senior level strategic and operational committees within Alberta Health Services.

The Senior Medical Director, IPC reports directly to the Vice President and Medical Director, Northern Alberta, particularly with respect to personal performance assessment and physician-related matters while the IPC Dyad and program report additionally to the Vice President of Clinical Support Services.

A minimum of eligibility for medical licensure within Alberta and preferably certified by the College of Family Physicians or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, plus a demonstrated successful leadership experience in the health care operations environment. Training and demonstrated success and leadership in healthcare institutional (preferably acute care) Infection Prevention and Control is required.

Additional skills and experience required for this role includes: Progressive senior leadership experience in a healthcare environment, including experience in a senior management role in clinical services or healthcare operations; successful record of achievement as a leader, including extensive experience in senior leadership of a large and diverse range of functions; utilizing strategic thinking, taking into account long-term goals assessing options and implications. Demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues.

Leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others; possess a proven ability to foster partnerships and to achieve organizational goals within a large, diverse organization; and capable of fostering a climate of cooperation amongst, and build solid relationships with public agencies, government, boards, committees and other partners.

Ability to manage diverse human, financial and physical resources within a complex environment, in particular, managing within a unionized sector. Effective communicator with strong organizational skills, patient-focused orientation and commitment to providing long term quality services.
