As per Bylaw 2.4.2, the DZMD shall assist the ZMD fulfilling his/her duties. Without limiting the authority of AHS relative to its administrative structures, the responsibilities of the DZMD include, but are not limited to:

The Deputy Zone Medical Director shares responsibility with the Zone Medical Director, AHS Clinical Operations and Chief Medical Officer teams for:

  • Contributing to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the overarching AHS strategic and operational plans that support patient-focused integrated care programs and delivery within Zones;
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of overarching AHS clinical policies and procedures;
  • Engaging Medical Staff across the province, advising AHS on issues related to clinical care and policy, as well as physician/Practitioner-influenced aspects of resource utilization.
  • Building and engaging Strategic Clinical Networks central to AHS and quality of patient care, safety, and health care improvement.

The Deputy Zone Medical Director is responsible and accountable for:

  • Providing leadership and oversight of programs, services, and activities for the effective operation of the Zone;
  • Providing leadership in the development of Zone plans and priorities, and performance agreements, working in collaboration with the Priorities & Performance Portfolio and Strategic Clinical Networks;
  • Driving improvement and innovation in service delivery models, including those that embrace interdisciplinary care and teams, and for achieving agreed upon outcome and performance goals in the Zone;
  • Directing the implementation of service strategies congruent with the AHS business plan within the Zone;
  • Enabling effective integration of Zone programs and services with sites and services within other Zones;
  • Developing a multi-million operating budget for the Zone and allocating fiscal resources within the Zone;
  • Establishing effective performance management within the Zone to support the accountability for Zone performance improvement through accountability systems, monitoring, and reporting on performance measures in order to meet short-term and long-term objectives within the Zone agreement;
  • Developing and maintaining a strong patient/client-centered focus and culture;
  • Representing the Zone to the various communities within the Zone, as well as internally, through the application of community relations and marketing.
  • Developing and maintaining an enabling structure for Medical Staff communication and engagement within the Zone;
  • Managing the delivery of the physician/Practitioner component of the Zone clinical and operational plans and programs;
  • Developing and overseeing clinical quality, patient safety, and clinical ethics activities, committees, and issues within the Zone with specific accountability for the effectiveness of outcomes achieved;
  • Leading, communicating and consulting with the Medical Staff and the Zone Medical Administrative Committee to ensure the development, review, and implementation of AHS and Zone clinical programs, policies and strategies;
  • Developing innovative programs and incentives to support and encourage physician/Practitioner professional practice and leadership development;
  • Ensuring the engagement and participation of physicians/Practitioners in the creation of interdisciplinary teams and models of care;
  • Coordinating the research activities and agenda within the Zone; and
  • Demonstrating and integrating the AHS dyad leadership model to advance accessible and quality patient-focused provincial health services in a sustainable manner.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Compensation will be determined by the AHS Physician Leader Compensation Grid and will be commensurate with the responsibilities of the position, the time required to fulfill these responsibilities, and the skills/experience of the successful application.

Position is a total 0.8 FTE but this is negotiable and can be shared by multiple Physicians.
