Senior Medical Director, Strategic Clinical Network: Bone & Joint Health

The Senior Medical Director (SMD), of the Bone & Joint Health Strategic Clinical Network (SCN) is a key medical leadership position within Alberta Health Services. In partnership with a Senior Provincial Director (SPD), and in the context of the AHS Dyad Leadership model, the SMD is co-responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the SCN. The SMD and SPD work collaboratively with the Scientific Director (the most senior provincial research leader of the SCN, with expertise in clinical, health systems and/or population health research) and the Executive Director to achieve the SCN Mandate.

Responsibilities (in conjunction with the Senior Provincial Director):

  • Leads the developmental process, including priority-setting and action planning for key priorities and outcome improvements, provincially and in each Zone

· Champions the priorities and articulates the benefit of achieving them

· Engages and recruits key leading clinicians as both members of the SCN and as stakeholders of the work developed through the Network

· Works as a partner with Zone Medical Directors in developing alignment between strategic priorities and Zone clinical leadership

· Develops strategies, methods and incentives to effect successful implementation of recommendations from the SCN, identifying key enablers, barriers and incentives for alignment

· Works with provincial AHS leadership and other stakeholders to develop and empower the SCN in an integrated service delivery organization

· Fosters partnerships with key stakeholders and groups within and external to the SCN (including, but not limited to, professional colleges and associations, and academic institutions)

· Fosters relationships with governmental and non-governmental entities, including Alberta Health, Covenant Health, and Medical & Allied Health Organizations

· Provides SCN perspective into provincial planning and priorities

· Advocates for the patient voice to be brought into all aspects of needs assessment, system design, research and evaluation

· Demonstrates a commitment to integrating evidence into decision making

· Contributes to designing an ongoing development program for the SCN which provides the skills, competencies and resources for the SCN to be successful

· Ensures that evaluation is embedded into all initiatives to measure outcomes at the patient, provider and health system levels

· Facilitates transformational change through collaborative approaches involving researchers, clinicians, administrators and policy makers

· Progressive senior leadership experience in a healthcare environment (clinical services and / or healthcare operations)

· Significant experience at building and leading multi-disciplinary teams

· Successful record of achievement in delivering complex change using care development, process and pathway change, and measurement systems

· Respected profile in the clinical community / service area of interest

· Effective communicator using multiple media and forms of engagement

· Ability to undertake evidence-informed (data-driven) decision making

· Strong interest in innovation, knowledge transformation systems and creating environment for innovation adoption

· Expertise in creating and aligning accountability and incentive systems

· Some experience with / support for health research and / or education (academic credentials / appointment are NOT essential)

· Ability to foster partnerships and build networks to achieve goals

· Commitment to patient / public-centered health care system in Alberta
